Chapter 6

The proof came when Daniel went away for a weekend accounting conference.
At least, that was what he told me.
The hotel receipt on his email said otherwise.
The conference did not exist.
With Marissa’s help, I learned Daniel had used the weekend to meet with a man named Victor Lang.
Victor had been investigated for real-estate fraud.
He convinced women to co-sign loans, then disappeared with the money.
Daniel had been helping him find targets.
Wives.
Girlfriends.
Women with good credit.
Women who trusted him.
I sat in Marissa’s office and stared at the printed messages.
Daniel had called me “the easiest one yet.”
Something inside me went very still.
I had loved this man.
I had stood beside him in white.
I had promised to build a future with him.
And he had seen me as an account number.
The police opened an investigation.
They told me I needed to leave immediately.
But leaving safely required planning.
Daniel monitored the house cameras.
He checked my phone.
He knew my normal routines.
So I acted normal for one final day.
I made breakfast.
I kissed his cheek.
I told him I had signed the loan papers.
He smiled.
“See? I knew you would come around.”
Then he left for work.
The moment his car was gone, Marissa and two officers arrived.
I took my bag.
My files.
My wedding dress.
Nothing else mattered.
As I stepped outside, I looked back at the house.
I had once imagined children there.
Holidays.
Warm dinners.
Instead, I saw a trap.
I got into Marissa’s car.
Before we pulled away, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I let it go to voicemail.
Then another call.
Then another.
Finally, a message appeared.
May you like
Where are you?
I turned off the phone.
