Chapter 2

Margaret invited us to dinner the night Daniel’s fraud was discovered.

She served soup in her best china and spent the whole meal insulting me.

“You seem tired, Eleanor,” she said. “Though I cannot imagine why. You do so little these days.”

Daniel smirked.

I held my breath.

Then Margaret began praising Daniel’s secretary, Vanessa.

“She is so efficient,” Margaret said. “Some women understand how to make themselves useful.”

Daniel looked at me.

He knew I knew.

I took Richard’s envelope from my bag and placed it beside my plate.

Daniel’s face changed.

Later, when the guests were gone, he followed me into the kitchen.

“What is that?” he demanded.

“The truth.”

He grabbed the bowl of hot soup from the counter and threw it at me.

Pain struck my cheek and neck.

“You have ten minutes to get out of my house,” he snarled.

I wiped my face with a towel.

May you like

Then I held up the envelope.

“No, Daniel,” I said. “You have ten minutes before your entire life disappears.”
